The impact of COVID-19 on individuals and businesses has been overwhelming. As a result, many organizations are allowing individuals and companies some flexibility with deadlines, payments, and more. The National Institute of Health (NIH) is one such organization. They have extended the application deadlines for all NIH grant applications in order to allow those affected by the pandemic to apply and be reviewed during the current reviewing round.
Due to extenuating circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, NIH is offering a grace period for late applications. All Funding Opportunity Announcements that expire prior to May 1, 2020, will have an extension of 90 days to accommodate the submission of late applications. All late applications submitted for due dates between March 9, 2020, and May 1, 2020, will be accepted through May 1, 2020.
This announcement supersedes any previously published information regarding due dates and policies about accepting late applications. No special action on the part of the applicant is necessary. Due to the globally declared emergency, all late submissions up to May 1st will be honored without the need for permission or justification.
NIH intends to review all applications submitted by May 1st, 2020 in the round for which they were submitted, however, applicants that submit later than March 1st will likely not be able to be reviewed until the not be reviewed until meetings for the January 2021 council round. While the NIH wants to do all it can to allow the highest number of submissions during this time, the review process would be negatively impacted if submissions were allowed for this round beyond the May 1st due date.
If the emergency declaration related to novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has adversely affected your ability to submit NIH applications by the original deadline, there is still hope. Submit your proposals by May 1st to remain in the current review round.
